Synopsis

The stair tower is of the most complex steel structures to get right, with the need of successful integration of the steel’s strength and resilient qualities with the required speed of construction, efficient design, and top-notch aesthetics. This stair tower was primarily constructed for an industrial plant to access the top of their large equipments. With six flights and six landings along with a large height of 15 meters, the stairs include no splice in the columns.The designers arranged the two access stairs in a triple-helix configuration with welded plate for treads and risers within a helical diaphragm.

The stiff backbone ensured a combined gravity and lateral load system with four distributed steel members that contribute to the weight of the stair tower. The structure weighs about 14 tonnes and the entire structure was completed efficiently within just 12 working days.
